One of the most popular photos I've had published is this one of
a female dalmation that took over
a litter of kittens from the mother cat. "Purdy", owned by Jan and Tim
Hamblen of Marysville,
WA, took the kittens from "Lily" when the mother cat was showing maternal
indifference toward
the little darlings. Even though Purdy had never produced offspring of her own, the
kittens were
able to nurse and get milk. After appearing on the front page of our newspaper, the
photo was
picked up by AP. Hundreds of newspapers used it, and I heard from people from as far
away as
Japan, who liked the photo enough to respond. My own mother saw the photo in her
local paper in
Oregon, talked about it with friends, but had no idea that it was mine. (Some papers
give individual
photo credit, some simply say Associated Press.) The television stations jumped on
it, and the
Hamblens got a good taste of what it's like to have a famous member of the family.
In case you're
wondering what a news photographer earns for such a widely distributed photo, I'll fill
you in.
My check from AP was for $25.00. |
