"Louder this time. 1-2-3, 'I love the Marines!' O.K.,
you in the back, five pushups!" Marine recruiter Synaca Witherington,
foreground, leads Everett, Washington elementary school children through a few basic
exercise drills on the playground. It
was career day at the school, and my assignment was to check out the 30-or-so career
groups and shoot whatever made an interesting photo. This is typical of a daily newspaper
assignment. No blood and guts. Nothing sensational. Just a slice of life
from some every-day event. In this case, I had been shooting what seemed like a good
situation: a professional race car driver showing kids a colorful race car. But I
glanced across the field and saw these kids standing at attention for the Marines, doing
jumping jacks, pushups and whatnot. Any time you can get interaction instead of a static
situation, you have a chance for a better photo. |
