As sailors aboard the USS Ford pull out of of the
Navy Station Everett enroute to the Persian Gulf, the shadows of loved ones bidding them
farewell are cast upon the ship's hull. During the first few years of the Navy's
presense in Everett, our paper covered nearly all the coming and going of ships.
There were so many of these events, it didn't take long to use up the obvious photo
ideas. So, the challenge on this particular assignment was, and still is, to get a
page one photo that we haven't already seen ten times before. I walked the length of
the ship twice before noticing an unusual shooting position below the families of the
sailors. I thought I'd take a look down there and see if I could make a good
shot with their arms stretching out over the railing, toward the ship. But as the
ship pulled away, the shadows appeared on the hull for about 15 seconds, hands still
waving. I realized instantly that it was the photo I wanted. It was an NPPA
clip winner. |
